VOLUNTEER
The Open Award Unit is staffed by volunteers - and we always need more!
Do you have a skill you could offer, or do you want to learn a new skill yourself whilst working with young people. Perhaps you hold the Award yourself and want to give something back? then we want to hear from you!
Here's how it works...
Contact us, by email, letter or phone and arrange to meet us for a chat
That chat will be a two way discussion - where we get to know you, what you do and what you want to offer the Award in Dundee. But just as important - its your chance to get to know us, ask questions and see first hand what we do.
Although some volunteers offer time every week, the majority of our leaders offer assistance for only a few days, or even just a few hours per year. Its totally up to you, but everything is useful.
All of our leaders have to complete a criminal record check (Disclosure Scotland Check) prior to starting work with young people.
What you get in return..
Apart from the obvious rewards of helping young people achieve their Awards, The Dundee Open Award Unit receives assistance from Dundee City Council through the provision of training courses.
All leaders are offered free training in:
> Child Protection
> First Aid
Regular Outdoor Activities Leaders have access to additional courses at no charge, which include:
> Basic Expedition Leader Award
> Mountain Leader Award
> Mountain Bike Leader Award
> Trail Cycle Leader Award
In addition Leaders receive preferential discounts at Blacks and access to the Tiso club discount nights
Still at School? - Volunteers under 18
The Open Award Unit will accept a small number of young volunteers who are participating in the Award at Gold level. Such volunteers can use their voluntary work to count as their service commitment for their Award.
As all persons under 18 or still at school are themselves supervised/mentored or otherwise assisted by an adult volunteer. Contact Fiona for more information
